Abstract

2020 was characterized by unparalleled unpredictability and environmental stress. Pollard 2020 found that problematic drinking substantially rose for U.S. women. Given that women face compounded health challenges from alcohol use (Fama et al., 2020) it is imperative to understand the relationship between experiencing environmental stress and problematic drinking. Since a personality trait known as intolerance to uncertainty and coping drinking motives are both associated with alcohol-related problems, we sought to explore their combined role when environmental stress is also high. We hypothesize that when the intolerance to uncertainty and coping motives are both higher, individuals will be at higher risk for problematic drinking when they experience more environmental stressors Using multiple regression analysis, we found two-way and three-way interactions. Our data support our hypothesis that individuals who highly endorse coping drinking motives and are high in intolerance to uncertainty are most at risk for problematic drinking when they are experiencing more environmental stressors. Our data also aligns with previous research highlighting the association between intolerance to uncertainty and drinking coping motives.
